1. How often does my child receive HW?
Every week, we discuss what your child is reading. Your child has chosen a book that he or she is interested in and needs to read it a few times a week so that it is easy to complete the literature circle packet (one role each week) and can knowledgeably discuss that role on Friday. Thursdays are frequently days that we read or work on that literature circle packet. Unless we have the Teen Librarians, Vicky and Erick, visiting, like we did the week of September 20th and October 19th.
Your child will receive a few assignments to complete at home every month. I believe that students should work on their writing or assignments in class so that I can see what each student is capable of as he or she completes the work. It is also beneficial for the students to have access to me to ask questions when they are doing work too.
2. If my child is absent, how can he or she check what he or she missed?
Currently, any notes taken in class can be obtained from classmates. Any student who is absent should also check the class folders to find the worksheets from the day(s) the student missed.
3. How can I help my student keep up with the work?
Students have so many resources! It's not like when you and I were growing up. Now, a student (and you!) can download the Google Calendar app to your phone. Be sure to use the student's Google account, assigned to them at our school, when you sign-up. This way, you receive daily notifications about the work they will need to complete or study for in their classes.
In addition, students can utilize BrainFuse, a website provided by the Hampton Bays Public Library. This FREE website is accessibly with a library card and it as so many features. Students can send their paper in to be edited and proofread, they can ask for help with research, and study digital index cards.
Remind your student that they should try to get work done during tutorial, Advisory, their lunch periods, and after school (be sure to make an appointment with a teacher if it's after school). These are all great times for them to seek out a teacher if they have questions about an assignment or to receive extra help from that teacher.
Parents: Have a question, but don't see it answered here? E-mail me and if it fits the FAQ's segment, I'll post it.
